Overview

The Planning Technician II is responsible for performing structured cabling field inspections, creating technical documentation and ensuring that low voltage infrastructure implementation in public school construction, renovation, addition and rehabilitation environments, are implemented following customer specifications and standards. The technician ensures that prescribed low voltage standards are followed from design through hand off to operations support and provides current and ongoing status of project progress. Daily activities may include project monitoring, creation of technical documentation, responses to Requests for Information (RFI), review of contractor shop drawings, facilities department planning meetings and provision of current status of assigned projects.

Responsibilities

Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

 

The candidate for the position will:

  • Conduct onsite inspection of low-voltage infrastructure construction projects.
  • Create technical documentation for each assigned project.
  • Work in collaboration with the architect and Facilities Planning to respond to Requests for Information (RFI).
  • Review contractor and sub-contractor product submittals, shop drawings and plans.
  • Participate in Facilities Planning, multi-trade planning meetings.
  • Participate in weekly network planning meeting and generate weekly reports.
  • Support network equipment installation planning by reviewing service requests, plans, manuals, and technical guides.
  • Perform Proof of Performance (PoP) testing of contracted Low-Voltage cabling
  • Coordinates with Network Services capital project teams for transition to operational status.
  • Ensure adherence to industry and customer low-voltage standards.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of solutions under tight deadlines to accomplish project goals.
  • Perform planning tasks ensuring work is delivered on schedule.
  • Communicate with staff or clients to understand specific requirements.

Qualifications

  • Two years+ of related experience in the maintenance and installation of low-voltage infrastructure and related network equipment.
  • Experience reviewing and scrutinizing construction drawings and intended outcomes with the ability to clearly communicate required changes and deficiencies using standardized, formal communications.
  • Knowledge and Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) Phases of projects.
  • Experience and proficiency with BlueBeam™ software.
  • Basic knowledge of Wireless and Voice over IP (VoIP) technologies.
  • Ability to independently execute and manage network testing and diagnostic procedures using tools such as Fluke, VFL, OTDR, etc.
  • Knowledge and application of construction site safety practices.
  • Knowledge of cable management and standards issued by bodies such as BICSI.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365™ and Google G-Suite™.
  • Effective problem solving and technical leadership.
  • Customer focused background handling hardware and software and ability to develop strong working relationships.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including, but not limited to, plans (blueprints) procedures and technical documentation.

 

EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of BICSI standards and current industry-accepted practices to perform complete site inspections
  • Knowledge of structured cabling and electrical drawings
  • Knowledge of the various phases of the construction process
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures applied in the operation of computers, peripheral equipment, and networking

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Technical certificate related to networking (NET+, CompTIA, etc.) is desired.
  • Industry specific certification from bodies such as OSHA, BICSI, IEEE etc., are a plus

SECURITY CLEARANCE

  • Must pass an extensive criminal background investigation and 4-panel drug screen.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS (if applicable)

  • Must be a self-starter, able to work and learn independently and lead others in the delivery of technical solutions.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to multi-task in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
  • Can-do attitude and time management skills are critical.
  • Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Visio, etc.) to create and modify documentation.
  • Lift network equipment using safety procedures and equipment, up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • Reach locations above the head.
  • Attention to detail, with a focus on organization.
